Abilene Christian University was born by the idea of A. B. Barret and Charles Roberson whom thinking to build a school in West Texas. Local churches of Christ supporting the idea and ‘Childers Classical Institute’ opened for public in the fall of 1906 with only 25 participant at first. The name ‘Childers Classical Institute’ was chosen to honor J. W. Childers for help establishing the institution. In 1912, ‘Childers Classical Institute’ was named as ‘Abilene Christian University’.
